Belize is a great place for a family vacation regardless of the ages of family members. With diverse activities available on one vacation, it is usually possible to satisfy the individual needs of most members of a group. What's more, most accommodations and tour operators have specially designed packages for family travel whether it be a family with babies and young children, or teenagers; travel with a parent, or the family reunion that combines several generations.

Whether horseback riding, snorkeling, trekking Maya ruins, hiking the rainforest, wandering around town, visiting the famous Belize Zoo, everyone can join in. PADI has recently lowered the diving certification age to 10 so if you have an interested youngster, check with your local dive shop about certification before coming.

For older children and young adults, Belize can also awaken the awareness and knowledge of different cultures and ways of life and including music and entertainment. A stroll through a nearby town can provide the opportunity to meet new friends or join a basketball or volleyball game.

Most hotels in Belize are small and full service offering unique opportunities for added activities for children in a safe, friendly environment. Many accommodations have swimming pools, beach or river access, gardens and trails onsite, with a selection of games including board games, darts, volleyball and even table tennis allowing members of the group to be entertained within easy reach of the rest of the family.

Many hotels and lodges serve meals family style, adding to the rich family experience of meeting new people. For the palate that wants something familiar, grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly, hamburgers and fries are fairly common.

It is very common to find special rates and incentives for children travelling with adults. This can mean as much as 50% less than the adult price especially during the summer season. Family vacation packages are also available at most hotels.

1. Bring along any prescription medicines, that your kids may need while in Belize. Although there are pharmacies in all the towns, at some of the inland resorts you could be an hour or two away from the nearest town and the stores usually close by 9:00 p.m.



2. Be sure to bring, use and re apply high protection sunblock generously. It is hard to keep kids out of the sun and even on an overcast day one can get badly burnt, potentially ruining your vacation.



3. Although life jackets are a requirement for all boat operators, smaller sizes are not common, so bring along life jackets for babies and small children.



4. Communicate with your hotel and tour provider about the interests of your family to be sure that there are activities everyone can be involved in and that you know the arrangements for extra snacks, bathroom usage etc.



5. Stack up on high-energy snacks like granola bars and bottled water in cities or major towns before going on tours so that your children always have something available to eat or drink.



6. Pack water toys, stuffed animals and books to keep your children busy especially on the journey to Belize.



7. You will find a selection of disposable diapers, cereal and formulas in the towns, however if you have a preferred brand, be sure to bring.
