Even though the Creole, the descendants of African slaves and European settlers of the Colonial era, constitute only one-third of Belize’s population today, they may be considered to be the most “culturally influential group” in Belize.
From this culture has come one of the country’s dominant languages known as Kriol (Belizean Creole), the national dish of rice and beans, and “Brukdown” music a resonating blend of drums, accordion, banjo, harmonica and animal jawbones.
With so much intermingling and intermarriages since the colonial days, it is nearly impossible today to determine by physical attributes alone, who is or, who is not a Creole.
