Coral House Inn

Destination: Toledo

In August 2002, Coral House Inn was just an abandoned house at the end of Main Street.  The grounds were covered with high, thick brushes and encaged by tall walls. After finding wonderful old tiles on the downstairs patio, we agreed to look into the property further, resulting in our purchase of the property from Dr. David Kopel in January 2003.  We found that a French Canadian built the core of the house of large rock and concrete in 1938.  In the mid-50s Dr. Kopel, previously with the British Medical Service, purchased the house, added more bedrooms, bathrooms and the pool.

In November 2003, an extensive reconstruction project began, finishing the majority of the work by February 2005.  The most difficult part of reconstruction was removing and replacing the old concrete roof.  Only two new rooms were added, so great care was taken to preserve the character of the old building, including the wonderful arches, old tile and structural buttresses.  The house was built to withstand the forces of nature in southern Belize and we did our best to follow that lead in our remodel.

The property is located on the highest point of Belize’s coastline, affording protection during storms and creating an interesting shoreline comprised of plentiful sea glass and small pebbles.  Just outside the old adobe walls that surround the Inn, is a historic, US Confederate cemetery.

Coral House Inn officially opened doors for business in 2005. A beautifully remodeled 1930’s house with a swimming pool, offers 4 modern rooms opening onto a spacious veranda overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It is conveniently located at the quiet end of Main Street, Punta Gorda (PG), combining the tranquility and services of a destination resort with easy access to the entire region.

From the spacious verandas, watch the ever-changing colorful sky, birds catching the updraft from the sea, the pelicans fishing off shore, and ships going into and out of the Guatemalan port of Puerto Barrios. PG is the transportation hub for southern Belize, supporting an airport with flights to all of Belize, convenient bus service to the villages and all points north, and boat connections to Guatemala and Honduras. Come experience this wonderful small town on the sea.

Complimentary amenities include: swimming pool, TVs, bicycles, wireless internet and continental breakfast. You can explore the colorful and safe town of PG for the perfect Caribbean lunch and dinner.

Tours are available from the Mayan Mountains to the amazing Sapodilla Cayes on the Belize Barrier Reef.
