Sports, nightlife, annual celebrations, local theater, dining, shopping, a few casinos and, the occasional concert are Belize’s main entertainment options.
Soccer, softball and cycling are the most popular sporting events but there are national associations and competitions for basketball, volleyball, cricket and track and field in every town and village and in all schools.
Nightlife comes in the form of local nightclubs with blaring music and active dance floors; hotel bars with outdoor decks or beach parties; or a leisurely meal and socializing in neighbourhood restaurants. Many hotels offer Happy Hours with entertainment by local artists, cultural dancers or participatory games such as San Pedro’s “Chicken Drop”.
Chinese restaurants are the most prevalent in the country but that is not your only option. Street-side cafes serve local fare offer people-watching opportunities and hotels and restaurants if the more-visited tourist areas offer an assortment of local gourmet and epicurean delights.
Shopping in Belize centers around the art, crafts and furniture made by Belizean artisans usually with shipping options provided. However, there are small boutiques and shops in all major with choices of tropical attire, silver and gold jewellery. Duty free shopping is available at select locations.
Belize City, San Ignacio and Corozal offer the larger casino options in the country with small game shops with unmanned slot machines in most towns and villages.
Local theatre is primarily based in Belize City at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts often with travelling productions to the major towns. The same applies for concerts which are held at the Belize Civic Center with visiting musicians usually from the Caribbean and Central America. However, local community shows and pageants are commonplace during the September celebrations, Christmas and national holidays.
Belizean entertainment mixes traditional with the contemporary, providing you with a few more option to consider after a full itinerary of marine, rainforest, cultural or relaxing activities.
