A thousand years ago, archaeologists theorize that Belize was populated by over 1 million Maya Indians. More Maya sites are discovered every year in Belize, and one can hardly traverse the country side without observing some evidence of the past civilization. Many tour operators offer vacations exploring each of the major Maya sites in Belize. It is important that you know the locations and distances of the sites you wish to visit if on your own. Some of the more well know sites are healthy walks from any major transportation routes. Some sites are also located on private property and can only be visited by permission.
