Lighthouse Reef Atoll

This atoll is the farthest offshore, at 50 miles east of Belize City. This 16-mile long atoll is another marine lagoon bounded by reefs and sand islands. A nesting site of the rare Red-footed Booby is located on Half Moon Caye.

By providing access to the world’s most famous dive site, Lighthouse reef is a divers paradise.

Notable Features
Lighthouse Atoll is known for its famous Blue Hole, plunging 410 feet. Here, southern stingrays and majestic eagle rays tend to travel in fighter-squadron formations, and divers often find themselves face-to-face with wing-tipped manta rays in flight.  Since this area has enforced fishing restrictions, large grouper and other fish not usually seen are encountered by divers.

• Halfmoon Natural Monument the first marine conservation area in Belize, home to the red-footed boobies.
• The Belizean Atoll Gecko, is still not known from nowhere else on the entire planet, and is Belize's only reptilian endemic! Being nocturnal, it may be prove difficult to see.
  

Visitor Experience
Camping and basic accommodation are available on Half Moon Caye.  A small visitor’s center provides valuable information on the atoll and overview of marine activities while a nature trail takes visitors near the home of the protected red-footed booby.

An observation tower and picnic facilities make this an ideal stop between dives.

Diving, fishing or snorkeling in this area can be arranged with licensed tour operators based in can be arranged with qualified dive operators based in Belize City, Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker and a few of the southern islands.
