Beacon And Celebration in Honor of Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

Belize City, Belize – Friday, June 1, 2012 – As Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II continues to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee, the Scout Association of Belize is honoring this extremely special event with the building and lighting of a beacon and a grand ceremony being held under the patronage of His Excellency Sir Colville N. Young on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 8:30 p.m. at the Governor General’s Field in the capital city of Belmopan.

“Our aim is to get as many Belizeans as possible to partake in this historical event,” said Cecilia Neal, the Queens Diamond Jubilee Beacon Scouts Coordinator. “With the building and lighting of the beacon, Belize joins a community of countries across the UK and the globe that are commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.”

It is only the second time in British history that a monarch has reached this quintessential time in their lives, as her majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrates sixty years reigning on the throne.  The only other British monarch that has celebrated a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897.  Beacon-lighting has been used in Britain to celebrate royal weddings, jubilees and coronations. Roughly, 2,012 beacons are expected to be lit across Britain and all the Commonwealth countries across the world in honor of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. On the Queen’s Silver and Golden Jubilee, a similar beacon-chain was lit in honor.  Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will light the final beacon in Central London.

Entertainment at the celebration will include live Steel Band Music and performances by ‘The Dream Marching Band’.
