Belize is an ideal destination for the traveler looking to stretch a dollar without compromising fun and adventure. Endless options are available to those on even the tightest budget and are only increasing as the requests for affordable travel are increasingly being heard and responded to. The following list of suggestions will help the budget traveler get the most out of Belize. The most useful and comprehensive source of information regarding budget travel in Belize is the Toucan Trail. The Toucan Trail is a cooperative marketing effort of over 100 small hotels which offer rooms for US $60 per night or less. In an effort to promote socially-responsible, environmentally-sound, sustainable tourism to benefit both the local communities and the visitors who go there, the Toucan Trail presents visitors with travel options that cover everything from local attractions, restaurants, recipes, to accommodations, travel tips, and media. When traveling within Belize's interior the least expensive way to get around is by bus. Virtually every town and village is accessible from Belize City. Buses between smaller towns and villages are less frequent but offer at least one regular daily stop. The longest bus ride between Belize City and Punta Gorda averages out to cost about US$23. Many of the national parks and Mayan sites are located along the main highways and it is usually possible to make a stop and get back on a later bus. Be sure to talk with the conductor and/or personnel at one of the visitor information centers located in most towns to make these arrangements.

The best way to save money on eating and drinking is to stick with the local fare at smaller--restaurants, a tasty and inexpensive way to go. Meals begin at about US$1.50 for breakfast, US$2.50 for lunch, and US$4 for dinner. Local brews and rums are widely available and are significantly less expensive than the imported selection. Many hotels and guesthouses have a kitchen area available for guests. Purchasing food from the local market is a great way to enjoy the food and produce of the country and helps keep eating costs to a minimum.
