Belize City, Belize – Monday, June 25, 2012 – On Thursday, June 22nd, 2012, the Sustainable Tourism Program (STP) launched its Ambergris-San Pedro Sunset Board Walk and Water Taxi Terminal Project, geared towards the continued rejuvenation of our tourism product, BELIZE.
The ceremony held at the Saca Chispas Football Field in San Pedro was informative as STP personnel divulged the estimated timeframe for its completion (16 months) as well as the key construction focus areas: the Fisherman’s Promenade the Sunset Boardwalk, the rehabilitation of the Saca Chispas Football Field, the augmentation of the Water Taxi Terminal and Platform.
“This project will promote local employment, while enhancing the lagoon area of the island, allowing for commercial and tourism related business opportunities for our local entrepreneurs. This unique development embraces our fishing heritage and the maritime function of the lagoon, yet reflects the essence of modern day San Pedro,” remarked Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., Minister of Tourism and Culture.
The primary goal of the project is to consolidate water travels in San Pedro, creating a better flow of local and international traffic, commerce, building-on public and private partnerships for commercial and cultural growth, and the waterfront beautification which will directly create more leisure options on the island. The San Pedro Sunset Board Walk and Water Taxi Terminal project is valued at 5.69 million, BZE currency. The STP, under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, has selected the RGB Construction Company for the execution of the project.
Other projects presently underway by the STP includes: the Cayo Welcome Centre and San Ignacio Town Rehabilitation Centre in San Ignacio, the Placencia Municipal Pier and Plaza at Placencia and the Belize City Fort Point Pedestrian Walk in Belize City. All these will contribute tremendously to the betterment of Belize as a top tourist destination.
