Belize Tourism Board offers free vacation to frontline workers
With summer 2020 almost over, it’s hard to believe we spent a significant portion of it at home due to a pandemic. Our Spring Break study and travel plans were all scrapped to much of our chagrin. Perhaps arguably more difficult than being quarantined at home is being on the frontlines of Covid-19, whether as an essential worker or healthcare professional. Belize did not escape the claws of coronavirus, though thankfully we have managed to contain it quite effectively. Still, our healthcare professionals and frontline workers remain diligent in their duty during a time of adversity. Because of this, the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) has graciously offered vacation getaways to four deserving frontline workers in Belize.
Through the Belizean Traveller campaign – which promotes domestic travel – the BTB introduced the Essential Workers Competition as its second phase. This comes as a part of a Community Outreach Project, where BTB staff personally contributed monetary relief to communities that had been affected by the indirect ripple effects of Covid-19. Eight unsung heroes have been nominated by the Ministry of Health and the Belize Police Department. There are two categories for the Ministry of Health: forefront and behind the scenes, with one winner being selected from each category; two winners will be selected from the Police Department.. Winners will be chosen by the general public by voting via the Belizean Traveller Facebook page athttps://www.facebook.com/belizeantraveller/.
Fans can vote by clicking the selected nominee bio with a reaction such as ‘like’ or ‘love’. Voting began on July 24 and the winners will be announced on August 7, 2020. Each winner will get a prize package for a two-night stay at a luxurious Belize resort and a cash prize.
Belize’s size and affinity for ecotourism make it the perfect place to enjoy the spoils of nature while safely social distancing. These Belizean heroes deserve a much-needed vacation and we are thankful to the BTB staff for being able to make it possible.
