梅斯蒂索人是一個充滿活力的文化，其遺產起源於瑪雅和西班牙文化。迄今為止，這些後裔是居住在伯利茲北部地區的大多數。

正如文獻所表明的那樣，一位名叫貢薩洛·格雷羅（Gonzalo Guerrero）的西班牙水手在新世界發現后不久就在伯利茲海岸遭遇海難。正是這次到來最終在舊切圖瑪律（聖麗塔村，科羅薩爾）的瑪雅統治者納坎漢和格雷羅之間建立了新的友誼。最終，這個現在的西班牙盟友娶了納坎漢的女兒，他們的孩子被視為伯利茲的第一個混血兒。
