Here’s Why Archaeology Magazine Featured Caracol in the Top 10 Discoveries of 2025
Archaeology Magazine’s January/February 2026 issue features Belize in its “Top 10 Discoveries of 2025,” spotlighting the historic find at the Caracol. The article, titled “Return of the King,” highlights the confirmed discovery of the tomb of Te’Kab Chaak, founder of Caracol’s ruling dynasty. It was uncovered during the Caracol Archaeology Project’s January 2025 field season by renowned Maya archaeologists Drs. Arlen and Diane Chase.
The discovery of the 1,700-year-old tomb revealed significant artefacts, such as a jadeite and Pacific spondylus shell mosaic death mask. These findings deepen our understanding of the Caracol Maya Site’s legacy. When the Institute of Archaeology made the grand announcement in July 2025, locals and visitors alike were intrigued! Many felt compelled to visit the magnificent site, whether for the first time or to rediscover it.
Caracol Maya Site
The Caracol Maya Site remains one of Belize’s most expansive and powerful ancient cities. It covers approximately 38 square miles within the Chiquibul National Forest Reserve. It was home to nearly 100,000 people at its peak and defeated major regional powers such as Tikal, Naranjo, and Ucanal in Guatemala. Since 1950, excavations have uncovered numerous carved stelae, altars, causeways, ball courts, and reservoirs. Its tallest structure, Canaa, meaning “Sky Place,” rises 141 feet and remains Belize’s tallest manmade structure.
