Maya Day

Experience the vibrant spirit of the Maya Day celebration at the Tumul K’in Center of Learning in Blue Creek Village, Toledo. This annual event held in March offers a unique opportunity to immerse in the living Maya culture, celebrating the three distinct Maya groups in Belize: the Yucatec, Mopan, and Kekchi.

Going beyond archaeological sites, the festivities blend traditional rituals with contemporary activities, showcasing the talents and skills of local communities. In the lead-up to Maya Day, competitions, games, and cultural dances captivate audiences, including the exhilarating Fire Dance—a traditional display of skill and agility.

As the celebration unfolds, Belizean and neighboring Maya communities come together to perform sacred dances such as the Deer Dance, honoring their cultural heritage and spiritual connection to the earth. Rituals paying homage to the four colors representing the earth’s pillars set the stage for a day filled with live marimba music competitions and traditional activities.

From tortilla-making to corn grinding, attendees witness the essence of everyday Maya life, while games like the Greasy Pole and the Greasy Pig add excitement and friendly competition to the festivities. Join us in celebrating the rich tapestry of Maya culture at the Maya Day event—an unforgettable experience of tradition, unity, and community.
