Belize Turns 37 – September Celebrations
Oh, Belize – the country that has made the word fête a verb. Known to be a vivacious people, we take our country’s birthday quite seriously. Independence Day is technically September 21, but the revelry begins the moment those 18 flags go up at the national monument on September 1. This year our young country completes 37 years since we became independent from Great Britain.
Belize Celebrations
To reiterate that we are a proud country capable of anything, no matter how small, the theme for 2018 is “Belize Da Fi Wi – Now and Forever, 8867.” Da Fi Wi, meaning “it’s ours,” is timely as it evokes “…national pride and an exhilarating spirit of nationalism for our beloved Belize,” says Patrick Faber, chairman of the National Celebration Commission. Every year, Belizeans – home and abroad – go all out when celebrating the country’s independence. September is chock-full of events, from the 1st all the way to the highly-anticipated parades held on the 21st. This is arguably one of the best times to visit Belize as you get to see the locals in their element. The merriment is contagious and you can’t help but share the exhilarating joy of honoring the country. From paint-throwing street parties to witnessing a kaleidoscope of colors complete with feathers & glitter (usually accompanied by swaying hips dancing to the Belizean beat.) The screaming colors of red, white and blue dot buildings, streets and even people.
If that doesn’t spell fun for you, we don’t know what does. A perfect eclectic balance of patriotism and jubilee, September Celebrations beckons to be experienced. If you’d like to be a part of history being made on the Belize streets every September, check out the calendar of events here. We will list the ones you absolutely can’t miss below:
Battle of St. George’s Caye Day – Arrive early at the Belize City Memorial Park on September 10 to witness ceremonies, a parade and other invigorating activities. This event commemorates the battle on St. George’s Caye that we won against the Spaniards in 1798.
Carnival – The rambunctious explosion of color and sound take to the streets alongside parade floats that usually have alcohol, beads or snacks to give away to onlookers. Make sure you cop a good spot that has some shade from the sun and a good view of all the dancers and floats.
Pan Yaad – One of the most highly-anticipated steel band concerts graces the Marion Jones complex stage on September 16. Seeing local talent beat on harmonious steel pans is nothing short of spiritual awakening, almost.
September 21 – On this day, the entire country shares one pulsating rhythm; from parades in Orange Walk to parties in the city.
