What’s in my Bag – Travel Essentials when Visiting Belize




You’ve finally booked your long-awaited flight to Belize, but what’s next? With this tropical country being an anomaly – both in the Caribbean and Central America – it might be a little puzzling to know exactly what to pack for your Belize Vacation.

Depending on your itinerary, your travel essentials may vary. Whether you decide to frolic on San Pedro’s sandy beaches or grace your taste buds with famous Orange Walk tacos, we have conveniently split your travel essentials by region.


Northern Belize

For this region, you will notice the weather will change slightly depending if you’re in the rural areas, like the Lamanai Maya site, or near the coast, like Corozal town. Because of the lowlands, the warm temperature may be a bit more noticeable in rural areas.

Suggestions:

  • Light clothing, i.e. shorts, tank tops
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • A pair of flip flops
  • A pair of comfortable hiking shoes
  • Insect repellant
  • Bandanna
  • Hat

Central Coast

With Belize City being the epicenter of the central coast region, your backpack might carry slightly different essentials.

Suggestions:

  • Comfortable closed-up walking shoes
  • Inconspicuous fanny pack or something similar

North Islands

Southeast Coast

With idyllic Placencia and charming Hopkins, your visit to the Southeast Coast is guaranteed to be the most Zen. Here’s the list for how to make the most out of your stay at the world-renowned coastal towns:

Western Belize

Rolling hills, gushing waterfalls – Belize’s inland region administers more to the adventurous traveler, but those wishing to relax can also find activities suited to their taste.

  • Light cardigan/sarong

Southern Belize

The Southern part of Belize will provide authentic Maya experiences and curious cultural encounters.

  • Light clothing, i.e. breathable long pants, long-sleeved shirts
  • Fishing gear

  • light backpack

Belize Reef

When visiting the atolls or snorkeling to see the myriad of marine life underwater, the following suggestions can help with planning your visit:

  • UV protective clothing
  • Sunglasses
  • Affordable waterproof phone case/pouch
  • Affordable waterproof camera
  • Affordable waterproof mid-sized backpack
  • Water-mesh shoes 
  • Hat 

These lists aren’t limited and while you may add whatever you like, we advise to pack fairly lightly so as to make travels from activity to activity easier for you. Here’s a list for general packing that at first may seem obvious but may come in handy:

  • Portable pocket-sized charger
  • Passport/visa
  • Cash
  • Travel insurance
  • Backpack
  • Passport pouch
  • Pocket-sized battery-powered misting fan
  • Camera with enough memory
  • Insulated water bottle
  • Extra backpack/carry-on for souvenirs or any items you may purchase in Belize
