Belize’s Currency Notes Have a New Look!
The banknotes of Belize are getting a meaningful redesign, which many would say is long overdue! Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait currently appears on every denomination, symbolizing Belize’s historical ties to the British monarchy. The Central Bank of Belize is now shifting its focus to improving the security features of the banknotes to combat counterfeiting and misuse. They saw this change as an opportunity to reflect national pride in the new polymer banknotes.
What’s Changing on the Banknotes?
The new look will remove Queen Elizabeth from all denominations – $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. The new banknotes of Belize will honor two of Belize’s most influential nation-builders: Rt. Hon. George Cadle Price and Hon. Philip Goldson.
George Cadle Price, the Father of Independence, led Belize’s peaceful transition from a British colony to a sovereign nation. As the country’s first Prime Minister, Price dedicated his life to building a unified and independent Belize. His philosophy was rooted in social justice, equality, and nationalism. His leadership through the People’s United Party was pivotal in achieving Belize’s independence on September 21, 1981. The $5, $20, and $100 notes will feature his portrait.
Philip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson, the Father of Democracy, was a journalist, lawyer, and political activist. He co-founded The Belize Billboard, a newspaper that fearlessly voiced people’s concerns. Goldson was a founding member of the People’s United Party before eventually leading the opposition, United Democratic Party. He fought for education, freedom of expression, and democratic governance, which laid the foundation for Belize’s modern political landscape. His image will appear on the $2, $10, and $50 notes.
The new banknotes of Belize will include cutting-edge security features like holographic lines, intricate watermarks, and tactile elements. Each denomination will be color-coded with themed illustrations, such as iconic landmarks, flora, and fauna, for ease of use. The redesigned notes are a proud step forward, celebrating Belize’s history and safeguarding its future. Stay on the lookout as the updated banknotes will start circulating in the latter part of 2025.
