Something seldom encountered in our everyday life? Quietness.

The quest for a quieter, more serene lifestyle is rising, with searches for “quiet life” soaring by 530% in Pinterest’s 2024 Travel Report. It’s the places where the rainforest seems to be exhaling, or the tropical atolls where there are more sea birds than residents.

Here are some quiet holiday spots where you can escape the crowds during your trip to Belize. You can trust us because we are experts in this area. Belize is the least-populated nation in Central America!Slow travel is an important part of sustainable tourism, especially in Belize. You don’t always have to go far to appreciate nature. You can find quiet places without man-made noise or over-tourism, even if you look for them.

Remote Shrines to the Ancient Maya

Belize is home to over 1,400 archaeological sites. These sites are hidden gems in the green rainforests. Ancient Maya temples and memorials rise from the jungle floor.

Each site calls for quiet and respect. Some places are on the edges of towns, while others are far from cell service, like deep in the Chiquibul. This kind of quiet doesn’t only come from distance alone, but respect as you fall silent in the presence of their preserved cultural heritage.

At each site, the only noise you can reliably count on is excited chatter from your local guides, who are often of Maya descent themselves. The loud calls of howler monkeys mix with this chatter. Try visiting the less popular areas for lesser-known Maya cities like Northern Belize and Toledo, which have fewer visitors.

Cerros is the country’s only coastal Maya site and the first official center for traders arriving by canoe to the Northern Peninsula in the Bay of Chetumal as of 50 BC. Or, either of Toledo’s two Maya sites that sit at the foothills of the southern Maya Mountains.

Quiet covers the green lawns of Nim Li Punit’s plaza and ballcourt. This site has a 30-foot stela, one of 26 found here. People still praise it as one of the tallest ever found in Mesoamerica.

In a nearby village, Lubantuun has 14 main buildings. These are the only ones in the Toledo area without stelae. And they have a unique feature: they’re also the only ones built without mortar.

Coastlines All to Yourself

After the clunk of your boat engine, that’s it.

Pick an island and find yourself in tropical bliss, outnumbered only by nesting birds, with a soundtrack of breaking waves over the Belize Barrier Reef that’s enough to lull you to sleep, either as a midday siesta or when camping. If you’re truly seeking solitude from any noise pollution, we say opt for one that’s either out of cell service, away from electricity, has no formal accommodations, or all three.

Camp at places with basic amenities. One option is the historic Half Moon Caye Natural Monument. It is a small, crescent-shaped beach surrounded by coconut trees. This site is the country’s first protected area.

Another option is Moho Caye. It is a private island near Laughing Bird Caye National Park.

If you want to camp under a roof, Glover’s Reef Atoll is a good choice. It has four wooden walls and a thatched roof. This place offers an off-grid experience. And during the day? You’re completely unplugged to sunbathe, snorkel, scuba dive, fish, and paddle to your heart’s delight.

Vast Wildlife Sanctuaries, National Parks, and Reserves

Nothing will take you further from the noises of home life than the deep jungle.  Every dollar spent in Belize’s protected areas, like national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, helps local communities. It also funds more conservation efforts.

This is as beneficial as relaxing in nature. Giant old-growth trees and thick tiger ferns cover the rainforest floor. This almost hides any sounds from hydroelectric generators or all-wheel vehicles you might hear off the main path.

Focus on the sound of your breathing in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. Explore private areas like Hidden Valley, which has 7,200 acres and 90 miles of hiking trails.

Or, hop on a mountain bike. They can take you on singletrack, dirt roads, and dry creek beds. This will lead you deep into the heart of the site.

Some might rather subdue sound by spelunking instead. Feel the sounds from a canoe or kayak in Nohoch Ch’een or Barton Creek Cave. Enjoy the unique experience with every paddle stroke.
