Belize to Release Its National Symbols Coin Series




Belize is launching a new National Symbols Coin Series in September 2026, introducing a modern set of coins that celebrates the country’s national heritage, identity, and history. The Cental Bank of Belize introduced the new Belize coins and the Royal Canadian Mint did the production. The series builds on the recently released 2025 banknote series honoring Belize’s Father of Independence, Hon. George Cadle Price, and Father of Democracy, Hon. Philip Goldson.

Unveiled in July 2026, the new coin series features a sleek, contemporary design created using advanced minting technology. Here’s what you need to know about Belize’s new currency and the National Symbols Coin Series.

Details of the Designs

The new coin collection is made of nickel-plated steel, except for the one-dollar coin, which is made of bronze-plated steel. Each coin showcases an iconic Belizean national symbol.

  • One Cent: features the unique petals of the Black Orchid, Belize’s national flower.
  • Five Cents: features the prominent snout of the Baird’s Tapir, Belize’s national animal.
  • Ten Cents: showcases the official Coat of Arms of Belize, detailing the central armorial shield with two mahogany woodcutters beneath a mahogany tree.
  • Twenty-Five Cents: highlights an alert Keel-billed Toucan, Belize’s national bird, displaying its oversized bill.
  • Fifty Cents: features the resilient Mahogany Tree, Belize’s national tree, showing its broad canopy and sturdy trunk. There’s also a commemorative fifty-cent, brilliantly painted version of the mahogany tree.
  • One Dollar: features a geographic map of Belize with a wave-design background.

The reverse side of all the coins displays the numerical value and denomination in the center, encircled by a laurel wreath. The upper arc has “BELIZE” inscribed on it, and the year of mintage appears at the bottom. Its unique edges, distinctive shapes, and a scalloped border framing the coin’s outer rim further distinguishes the collection. 

The National Symbols Coin Series will be an enduring tribute to Belize’s national symbols. The new coins will enter circulation alongside existing coins featuring the late Queen Elizabeth II, which remain valid legal tender.
