What historical landmarks are in Corozal?

British settlers left their mark in downtown Corozal with Fort Barlee. The Guerra de Las Castas or Caste War in Yucatán was at its peak between the 1840s and 1850s. However, to protect the settlers in Northern Belize, Lieutenant Governor Fredrick Palgrave Barlee built the fort with gun slits on every side to provide an all-around view against attacks. Interestingly, like St. John’s Cathedral in Belize City, Fort Barlee was built with the bricks originally used as ballast by ships that retrieved logwood and mahogany from the settlement to Great Britain.

Fort Barlee is the only fort in Northern Belize preserved by the Institute of Archaeology to showcase an era in Corozal’s fascinating history!
