What is the Eboe Town Festival?

August 1st is a significant date in Belizean history and Creole cultural heritage: Emancipation Day. It commemorates the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in 1834. The Creole community celebrates their ancestors’ freedom with the Eboe Town Festival. The event takes place at Isaiah Morter Square in Downtown Belize City from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with local artisans, information booths, and small businesses.

There are traditional and contemporary Creole performances of songs by Belizean legends, such as Leela Vernon, Mr. Peters and the Boom n Chime Band, Bredda David, and Lord Rhaburn. Along with all the cheerful activities, a highlight of the day is an outpouring of authentic Creole treats and dishes to indulge in. You will love the taste of rice and beans with stew chicken, boil up, cowfoot soup, fudge, coconut tart, and wangla – to name a few!

Where is Eboe Town in Belize?

Eboe Town is located in Downtown Belize City near Wesley Methodist Church and the Yaborough Green area. Historically, the area consisted of thatched dwellings where enslaved African families lived while the men worked in the logwood and mahogany camps. It is often regarded as one of the birthplaces of the Creole culture. Hence, the Eboe Town Festival takes place in what was once known as “Eboe Town.”
